Phasmophobia is an indie co-op psychological horror game developed by Kinetic Games. It was released in early access on 18th September 2020 for PC with crossplay VR support. Play with up to three other players as a team of paranormal investigators and explore haunted locations filled with paranormal activity.
Experience thrilling moments of gameplay as you interact with the ghosts, spirits, and other paranormal phenomena. Support your team by monitoring the location with CCTV cameras and motion sensors from the safety of the truck or head inside and get your hands dirty with the ghostly activity that will get increasingly hostile as time goes on.
Review Score: 9.7 / 10
In VR it will feel like incredible. Eventually youll get use to everything and its a way less scarry but the way the AI is programmed makes every game something hard to predict.
Despite that this is EA and there are some bugs, this game is “complete”
There are a handful of well thought out maps, with a randomly chosen ghost appearing in a different location with different routes every time you play, so there is variety in a sense. Hunting the ghost can be scarry but also tactical and fun, there is a skill cap but eventually it becomes easy to work together with teammates or Randoms.
My only fear/con is that of many, that the dev has struck gold but he is but one man and this game has so much room for growing.
I hope he can keep it together and get some more content in this game because its not only a must have for VR but a must have for people who want to be terrified.
I will give this a thumbs up for now, but I think larger maps (Asylum and High school) are too large and should either be scaled down or increase the number of players allowed, perhaps removing one of the floors. Even with motion sensors and sound sensors, it took close to 60 min with 4 people just to find the ghost. In comparison, it takes only 5-15 min to find the ghost in small/medium sized maps.
For this reason, nobody wants to play the larger maps, so we’re stuck playing the same few maps.
My suggestion would be to slice the map in half or remove one of the floors, so that you keep both versions just in case there are people who currently like the large map - something like a Asylum (small), High school (small) version. The backstory could be that the ghost caused a cave in to the building. I feel like this would be a good change because the experience was really meant to be balanced around the smaller sized maps.
Even though at the time of writing this I only have 10.5 hours I can say that this game is really fun and scary for me and my friends. It’s just so fun going into a house and hunting for ghosts and almost getting killed multiple times while trying to do it. It also just feels amazing when you can get enough evidence and guess what type of ghost you are dealing with. The only problem I have with the game is that they don’t tell you what some items do or how they work, like with the crucifix I still don’t know how to use it correctly and it seems like every video about it has a different way of using the item. I feel like just give items descriptions on how to use them or how they work or show them off in the tutorial. but other then that this game is great I would give this a solid 9/10.
[UGFE] Tamir Ultra
Overall I really love this game.
There are a lot of cool features in here (like talking to the ghost and interact with it and it’s the first time I see such a thing)
However, I can’t help but feeling like there is a huge part there that is missing.
Your job is only to discover what ghost it is and you cannot really deal get rid of it.
I expect that if someone pays me to deal with a ghost, he would not care about what type of ghost it is but if I got rid of it.
So I think in order to make this game perfect what the developers should do is to add a feature to exorcise the ghost based on the type of ghost that you deal with.
Starting off, I was thinking this was a buggy nightmare that could run on a potato and also would play like a potato. However, about the third game I got pulled into the nether by the ghost, while the ghost simultaneously pulled a turd from my bum. My friends ran away in fright and immediately vacated the premise. At that point I realized what a masterpiece this was. The main reward for doing well in this game is being able to successful stave off being scared by planning.
Eight Bit Hunter
This might just be the game that makes me want to become a ghost hunter. The visuals aren’t stunning and the bugs are bad, but that doesn’t matter. The actions of the ghost and voice recognition software might be the smartest idea of the year. When playing with friends, you can purposefully get them killed, or all work together to hunt the ghost. When playing with randoms, you can mess with them by using the voice chat to mimic actions that the ghost would take. There is so much depth to this game that i cant understand how they did it. I truly enjoy this game, and cant wait to eventually have a heart attack.
Also, the bugs are fricken hilarious
Generic Anime Protagonist
Very intriguing game so far with a lot of potential via future updates. Concept is great with being able to use your mic to talk to the ghosts and teammates as well. The tools to track down and figure out what type of ghost it is are nice which i am sure are actual tools and methods ghost hunters actually use. Overall Great game i can’t wait to see what the devs have planned for phasmophobia in the future 7.5/10 for me just because it’s in Early access right now
Except you’re not busting them; you’re identifying them.
And praying to your bodypillow or what ever closest object of worship to you that you aren’t murdered by “trash-compactor-mouth girl” (how a friend put it)
The game also has proximity chat. The ghost can also hear that proximity chat, even if you aren’t transmitting to your friends. So you can’t giggle to yourself or scream or breathe heavily. They can also understand you and get angry at key words, like “run” or “hide” or their name.
The game’s difficulty can range between “didn’t even see him once lmao” and “didn’t even see him once and my two friends are dead”
My favorite bit is when you’re so close to exiting the building and the ghost decides it doesn’t like that and closes the door in front of you, locks you in, and begins their hunt.
I can’t play this alone but I do play it with a couple of good buddies of mine and that gives me a balance of laughs and pants browning
Brilliant game, I’m still on lower difficulty levels but it should be enjoyable even when the game becomes more agressive and challenging. It’s well balanced, not horribly terrifying nor boring and not heavy on screamers. The updates road map is very promising too. If you have 2-3 friends to play with this game is a must-buy.
Great game, it just get a little repetitive and not scary. If you add a bit more of a variety and make it a bit scarier you have an amazing game. Even without all the that the game is great anyways. Definitely recommend buying and playing this game.
One of the BEST Multiplayer experiences I have had in a long time, with Friends and Randoms.
I would recommend playing it in VR if you have the opportunity to do so but it’s also fine without.
I can’t believe that only one Person made this game, please proceed to work on it, it’s a Gem <3
This is probably one of the only horror games i enjoy playing. Considering I used to Ghost hunt, this is just like that, obviously without the death. I cannot say how much i appreciate a game like this. Please add more tools and locations. Me and my friends agree you should add a prison, some abandoned homes, a mining tunnel, an abandoned campsite with multiple cabins to search as well as the food hall and adult cabins. There is so much potential.
Plus - Unbelievably fun
Plus - I got chills in my back from how scary it was
Plus - High replay value.
Plus - The idea to have voice coms heard only inside the game makes it much more atmospheric
Plus - U get to do some detective work to identify which ghost you’re dealing with, (probably my favorite part)
Minus - Voice coms didn’t work until we switched to beta
Minus - Tools description only tells you what they do, but now how or what are the range, controls etc
Minus - Some inconsistency (or bugs?) in the mechanics that can be pretty frustrating, especially regarding the crucifix
Minus - the visuals of the ghosts needs some extra work
Conclusion: While the server issues can be mood breaking, hopefully, most of them are solved before the full release, Highly recommended
This game is in a league of it’s own. It’s almost impossible to rate because there’s not much to compare it to. Regardless, for the price, easy 9.5/10.
This game is almost the perfect blend of teaching how equipment works, but letting you use it how you want.
The oppressive atmosphere and great audio engineering makes you feel the ghosts presence, more than see it.
The jump scares are great but not over used.
Even after 60+ hours, it still feels like a new scenario almost every time I go into a hunt. Sometimes, you’ll find the ghost in the first room, get all the evidence and objectives, and have a ghost that just gives you what you need. Other times, you have to poke and prod and try to dig out that last piece of evidence you need.
Active developers (Or developer) that are working on implementing new items, rebalancing items that need it, and refining the experience as a whole.
Lack of ability to play the maps you want. I get the ‘real world/payday’ style of picking maps but sometimes, the only jobs you get are low level on the smallest town house.
Clipping issues with some items that will fall through the map if placed/thrown just right.
VOIP issues (They are actively working on them) that will cause you to randomly not be able to hear a member of your team.
Ghosts will sometimes just no-clip a wall and kill you.
I think with just a few more bug fixes, and maybe some more gear or ability to control the gear you bring, this game would be a 10/10. But it is well worth the price because, even at 61 hours, I’m still having fun playing with friends.
I bought this as my friend suggested it, and have seen a bunch of youtubers play it as well. Now, I’m absolutely scared of the dark so refuse to do this game by myself so tend to follow my Fiance around houses or big areas. We were in a house and got all our objectives, we were trying to anger the ghost so we could get a picture of it. Laid down a crucifix on the floor and put the ghost box on the table, was calling the ghost every name under the sun and I swear to God it called me a b!tch I was so offended.
Would recommend 10/10
I really wish there was a middle ground to yes and no on steam review.
I’ve had a HUGE blast playing this with friends, the scare is real, it isn’t riddled with jumpscares and annoying cheap horror stuff, it genuinely makes you scared with just sounds half the time.
Gameplay and general fun stuff aside, the game is pretty buggy, which is to be expected, most friends I’ve played with always have a issue with the sound settings sooner or later, and sometimes holding items in VR get lost if you clip through a door, but given that this dev team seems really small, I can understand the few bugs.
Other then that, great game and I look forward to playing it more with friends! :DDDD
I never write reviews often, but this game really needed it and I needed a way to share this greatness of this game, so here I am. This game is a very good first person ghost hunting game, with immersive realistic experiences it is a great thriller and very addictive. I personally will continue to keep playing it and enjoy it as it will never get old. The developers could do so much with it, so if a Dev does happen to see this, please keep updating the game when possible.
– Extra: I have not gotten this game for free nor have I been given anything in compensation for the review, this is straight from my thoughts.
Slap Me Please
A great game. I would recommend to any that like horror, and have a few friends around to play with. At the moment though It’s kind of lacking in content. You may be able to get 3-4 hours play time out of it before you basically seen everything. I’d like to see a lot more maps, new ghost types, and more depth to the ghost themselves. Perhaps they add ghost that can wander instead of just sticking in the same room making it harder to locate the ghost. Maybe even a boss ghost too that is extra hard? I got a taste of what this game is about and I just want more content. Can’t wait to see what happens!
It’s rough at time, but with an early access game that’s to be expected. What’s not to be expected is the surprising level of depth and polish with many of the mechanics, which make me optimistic on the future of the game.
This all said, if you are thinking of trying out this game I have one piece of advice for you. Get at least two other people, or preferably even three to get and play the game alongside you.
The community is your average mixed bag and the games most lacking features are shown in its matchmaking or more accurately the lack thereof and server list, which makes the worst parts of the community just that much more apparent.
Great early access game, loads of potential! Looking forward to seeing where future updates take it. I only have a few gripes, the biggest being that ghosts in the high school level will always let you know where they are in the first couple of minutes by going absolutely nuts on the phone in the room they’re in. Pretty much lets players hone in on it immediately and sorta kills the tension. Larger maps could do with some more work, such as maybe tweaking ghost behaviors so that they’ll move objects, mess with the lights, or just have a presence outside of the room they’re haunting. Asylum is a cool map, but lot of people get turned off by it when they first try because they spend a ton of time wandering around the place with absolutely nothing happening. As it stands, the houses are definitely the most polished levels. The farmhouses are probably my favorite so far.
There are a fair amount of other small things could be improved, but it’s early access so that’s to be expected. There’s a decent amount of bugs to be ironed out as well. One of the funniest ones is the absolute hilarious collision for the voodoo dolls (throw one at the floor and watch it implode on impact). I do hope the developer hires a proper team for future updates. There’s a lot of promise here and bringing on some experienced programmers, sound engineers, etc could really take this game from great to incredible.
I play this game alone, with my preteen son, my teenaged daughter, and twice with my reluctant husband. My son refuses anything that’s not a house, my teenaged daughter demands I stop stealing things, and my husband doesn’t want to leave the truck. I am also the only one who will take photos because they are too scared to stay in a haunt long enough to take one.
I played alone until level 20, and I must say, the first few hours are terrifying. After my first ghost showing up right beside me, I said, “I quit, I’m out.” all the way to the exit. I still managed to take a photo in my fear. Now ghosts showing up don’t bother me. Even being hunted or killed doesn’t bother me. Want to know what bothers me? THE GHOST SOUNDS. They come out of no where and get me EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Once, I was watching a stream and the ghost just showed up on screen and my preteen son just grabbed me from behind. My previous statement of them not scaring me anymore went out the window. My body was filled with pins and needles.
I LOVE horror movies, tv shows, games, and books. I rarely get scared. This game scares me. I love it. It has some bugs still, but even with them, the game is playable and enjoyable.
I still haven’t played multiplayer with strangers yet. I honestly have no real desire to. And I am glad that there are options to play without them, although with added difficulty.
This has been the best horror game i’ve played in literal years, unlike other titles which use a loop of cues that always inevitable jump scares, Phasmophobia has tension and proper build up. half the time its not even sudden motions that bring a short high of fear; it is ever present, slowly building up an atmosphere, and waiting for the right time to strike.
Each contract starts off with the small objectives you see on the board in the truck, and you enter an unassuming location, at first all you hear is the oppressive white noise of your mind straining to make sense of the absence of sound as the house creaks around you, a patter of steps that you are sure were your friends in the upstairs room, your flashlight goes out, you hear heavy bootfalls as you cower in the hallway closet, a scream is all you hear before your light comes back on, and your friend is laying on the floor as you are now alone in a house with only a faulty flashlight and your wits to keep you safe from whatever lurks in the dark.
Whereas i would equate the average horror game to being on a swing-set i would describe Phasmophobia as riding a bicycle down a series of ever larger hills in a single run.
This game is early access, and i’ve not had a game in this category i’ve been so excited to see the development of since i first found Kerbal Space Program. Good developer if you happen to read my humble review, take away from my review that we expect great things from this game, but do not fall into the trap that is over promising the community. do things at your pace, smash what few bugs their are, and hire extra staff to help make this game the masterpiece it will one day be.
Pick up this game and have fun.
This game is amazing for it being early access. It does have it’s glitches and bugs every now and then but they don’t really affect gameplay. I hate scary games and scary movies… but this game has enough in it for me to keep playing and keeps me hooked.
I would actually like to see some things changed or added into the game.
— Things to do as a ghost. Literally just anything. preferably a way to interact with the other players while being a ghost. Or a way to help identify the ghost. I’m not saying they should directly interact with things, but maybe being able to look at books for evidence or things like that could be fun. Because as of right now being a ghost is really dull.
— Player speed. There really isn’t a significant difference between the running and just walking. And i don’t particularly enjoy holding the run button all the time in order to move slightly faster.
— Add different animations for when a ghost attacks. The hands on the face might be scary in vr, but as a person without a vr after a while the fingers on the screen don’t spook me anymore. Maybe having the ghost appear on your screen FNAF style where it just jumps in your face every now and then would be nice.
Other than that, here are the things i really enjoy from the game.
— Co-op play. I absolutely love this feature. Whether it is with randoms in a public lobby or with your friends, the game is great at showing what teamwork is all about.
— Crossplay. This feature is great given that it doesn’t limit the ability to play with other people.
— Maps. The maps are great!! Each one makes hunting ghosts fun and scary,
— Ghost types and “personalities”. Each ghost is random on whether it’s active or not in it’s respective ghost category. This keeps the game interesting an unpredictable.
I have bought this game for myself and two other friends. If I could I’d buy a copy of the game for everyone that asks me. I do not get tired of recommending this game to others and I cannot wait to see what the developers add in the future!!!
Right out the gate I’m going to tell you, if you’ve watched gameplay for this, watching it and playing it are 2 completely different experiences. Actually playing this game is 110% better and terrifying. I watched a couple let’s plays and didn’t think it’d be for me…well here I am telling you why you should buy it >
If you’re looking for a horror game that keeps the scares coming even after hours of play and makes you want to keep coming back for more, this is it.
For the low price of $13.99 it’s worth every cent and having played it, I’d have been fine with paying more for the experience I’ve gotten.
I HIGHLY recommend playing it in VR (you can still play with people that are on just their PCs as well so no downside there) but either way it’s still fun, VR with is just extremely immersive and way more scary (personally)
Even after 22 hours (at the time of writing this) I keep wanting to come back to it, every time someone asks me if I want to play it’s an immediate yes.
Gameplay is random in the best way possible, even if you go to the same maps each time will be different (room it haunts, ghost type, what it does, how it behaves, etc)
Sound quality is A+, where you are, distance from other players, radio, etc. All have an effect on how other players sound.
You can speak to the ghost, sounds can attract it to you, saying its name can anger it and more, speech recognition is fantastic.
Mechanics and the controls are great.
This game has nothing but room to grow, I wouldn’t change anything about it, only keep adding onto it.
Only (minor) complaints -
Voice chat can “sometimes” not let you hear a certain person but you can still hear them. (this one has been rare) but as long as everyone is communicating when a match starts you can just go back out to the lobby (group stays together) and it tends to fix it. Haven’t had this happen in the middle of a match, just right as one begins so not a huge problem to fix.
Also the ONLY reason I have this complaint, while yes I use discord for voice chat normally, the game is far better using the in game voice for the added experience.
Have had a couple crashes. This has been super rare and again, only has happened when loading into a map. (Usually the large ones, school and asylum) and in 22 hours of playing, I’ll place this one in the not bad for a early access steam game that is great in every other aspect.
So from “MY” experience, these 2 problems I have come across are not game ruining, minor issue and not gameplay breaking.
For everything you do get from this game, I can’t even complain when they do happen because I’m having such a good time.
So if you’ve been on the fence about picking this one up, let me tell you right now, if you like horror games, do yourself the favor and pick Phasmophobia up and support the developer.
I think this game needs alot more stuff to be added, but I’m giving it a thumbs up for early access. It’s playable at this time. But they need to add a few things IMO
1 . Scarier animations on the ghosts (a ghost crawling on the walls, upsidedown on the ceiling, heads turning 180 degrees, crawling rapidly on the floor towards you)
2 . An actual chase. Allow players to actually sprint faster, and ghosts to be a little faster. Ghosts need a bit more intelligent AI, they are easily avoided.
3 . Equipment in the game needs to either be thrown out or updated to actually feel useful. The sound sensor seems a bit lack luster and not helpful.
4 . Ghosts with personal stories behind them that allow you to play detective better. (ghosts that move things around maybe interact with environment and give more clues. Moving objects like cups is cool but I want to see more stuff like that, such as, a ghost putting a fingerprint on your friends back, a ghost hurting a player and leaving a trail of blood)
5 . Like I mentioned in 4, a ghost leaving a fingerprint on your friends' back would be a really cool thing to add, and maybe it could add a debuff like “curse” until you can cleanse yourself of “curse”, maybe the curse effect would make you unable to sprint. Just an idea.
I think this game has potential but as of right now, I’m not scared enough and it’s a fad game for me. I’m already bored of the game and I’ve played about 20 hours when I wrote this review.
Its a very fun game that can be quite scary especially in the beginning.
— Some progression - You earn money from missions for various tasks that you can spend on equipment.
— Risk vs. reward - If you die you lose the equipment you brought with you and can get partial insurance that depends on mission difficulty. This means that dying carries a consequence which makes everything more interesting.
— Can be quite scary at least in the beginning but once you know the basics it is not as scary anymore.
— Low price of the game. The game is worth the price.
— Extremely fun with friends. Hear their screams and laughs while trying not to die.
— Over 10 different ghosts
— Difficulty - Once you have the basics of the game covered you will rarely die and the game wont be as intense anymore. There really needs to be something to keep more hardcore players like myself playing like perhaps a harder difficulty.
— Not enough progression/things to strive for. You will most likely earn a fortune and buy all equipment multiple times over in relatively short amount of time (15 to 20 hours).
-Some models could use a rework like player models for example.
Overall this is a fun little gem that currently has a few bugs but nothing terrible. I hope this game grows and even improves on its core gameplay because it does have the potential to be something truly special. I hope to see more games like this in the future and I also wish AAA titles of this genre are released at some point in the near future.
Let me start out by stating that I am very easily scared by immersive horror games but I am absolutely hooked on this game. I wish I was charged more than 12 bucks to allow the developer to have funding for improving this game even further. In the future I can image more voice work for ghosts and more ghosttypes. The clunky ingame mechanics such as movement and items have its charm in my opinion.
The game is strategic in a way where you have to cooperate with your teammates in order to discover clues about murderous ghosts, so that you can find out what type of ghost it is and get paid for that. Every time you think, this would be a very bad position for me to get chased by a ghost, most likely it will, making your brain go full throttle fight or flight excitement to survive.
The community is a jolly and social people breed of people that also enjoy getting scared and friendly have a laugh abouyt the occurences. The people I have met until now have made my general phasmophobia experience an absolute blast.
To conclude, this is one of the few games where the price should not even be a factor of consideration. The question is rather do you have the time, are you ready to conquer spooky stuff with friends or potential friends ?
Vape Lord Wolnir
I enjoy this game for the following reasons:
1 . A friend of mine who is much worse at horror than I am (movies, videogames, tv, etc.) will NOT play this game at night and it took a few people and about a week of pestering/convincing to finally get them to play.
2 . Another friend will spam the local chat and spirit box with weeb songs while inside the house. 24 Hour Cinderella, Renai Circulation, and Dame Da Ne (Baka Mitai) has all gotten him hunted and nearly killed.
3 . I had triggered three consecutive hunts by reciting a very Catholic exorcism prayer.
4 . When introducing another friend to the game, I made it my mission to steal everything I could from Grafton Farmhouse for their first time. Oddly enough, the ghost has tons of unopened beer cans, unopened beer bottles and bourbon glasses, but no bourbon. When I asked the ghost where the bourbon stashed was kept, the child ghost started hunting.
5 . On numerous occasions, I had started a mission by singing the “Scooby Doo, Where Are You?” theme and it was not more out of place than Baka Mitai.
6 . I have no idea how the later specialized equipment is supposed to work, but its fun figuring it out.
10/10, would ******** the ghosts and steal their **** again. Kinda wish there were bigger (unmodded) lobbies for raid-like hunts. Hopefully soon.
I normally don’t take the time to write reviews, so if I do, it’s probably because the game/program is on the extreme end of good or bad. It’s exactly my cup of tea. I love the survival aspect, but I love the investigation and solving of puzzles, so this was a too-goo-to-be-true match made in heaven. That said, upon hearing about the game I had my doubts.
That said, I love, and I mean love] this game. It delivered everything I wanted, didn’t know I wanted, didn’t know existed, and everything I needed, all while wrapping it up in a cute bow and gilding the whole damn package in diamond-dust-infused platinum. Yes, this game needs polishing. Yes, this game needs a larger team to work on it. But it’s also in its baby stages; it’s not even remotely close to its peak regarding updates and fixes, and it’s managed to catch the attention of all and a little more. It takes a lot to scare me, truthfully, and this game has me squealing like a little ***** and pissing my pants like a truck driver after a drinking competition with a racehorse. The ghosts, the mechanics, the voice recognition, oh my god. It’s so stunningly put together, like one of those fix-all products you see on TV that solves all your problems, but this isn’t a $19.99 scam!
Thank you for creating this game. You officially own my ass.
Happy hunting, fellow ghost enthusiasts!
Ya Boi Hames
Games good, been playing for about 15 hours so far. It being early access means there is a lot of room for growth and development. There are somethings I hope they add to the game, like being able to carry more equipment. Only being able to hold three things does limit you especially if you are doing a job alone. That and just being able to use both your hands when using said equipment. On top of that, it would be cool to see if maybe down the line once we figure out what ghost is haunting a location, being able to exorcise it out. That would be cool. Not bad though, not a bad game for about 13-14 bucks. Fun to play with friends, which is a must since joining randy’s in public games 9 times out of 10 means people will not talk. Which you need to do in a game like this.
